According to ABC News, Mile End resident Koral Chandler found one of two bikes stolen from her home within hours after contacting pawnbrokers. Police said a 44-year-old Mile End man was arrested and charged with theft and other unrelated matters.
Chandler said she returned home on Wednesday afternoon to find her roller door open and her road bike and e-bike missing from the backyard. She said the door had been closed when she left at about 9:15am, roughly four hours earlier.
The stolen bikes were a Giant OCR2 road bike and an Aventon Abound e-bike. Chandler said she used the e-bike to take her children to and from school. Bought second-hand earlier this year when fuel prices rose, it cost about $2,500, she said.
After calling pawnbrokers, Chandler traced the road bike to a Cash Converters outlet. She said staff contacted police. SA Police said they received information that one bike had been presented to a second-hand dealer at Torrensville and were investigating.
The e-bike was not at the outlet, and Chandler said she suspected it could have been taken to another pawnbroker. She also posted an Instagram appeal seeking information about the bikes. Police said the arrested man would appear in court in November and urged people who locate stolen property to contact police rather than retrieve it themselves.
