According to The Guardian, social media feeds have recently filled with clips of unusual video game mashups, including Skyrim in Minecraft, Mario as Halo’s main character, and Skate 2 played in Call of Duty maps.

The publication reports that many of the clips are not simply AI-generated videos but projects built with AI-assisted coding. It says Anthropic’s Claude has become highly capable of decompiling game code, reversing compiled binary files into source code that can be edited. The process can make large-scale game modifications possible with far less time and technical knowledge than before.

Human input is still needed for the strongest mashups, The Guardian says, but AI tools can help combine games and generate playable results quickly. In one test described by the publication, Claude produced a basic browser game in four minutes and provided instructions for incorporating visual assets and hosting the result locally.

The report says the development raises concerns over piracy, copyright and publishers’ control of game code. It points to open-source launcher projects, emulated game codebases and advances in PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 emulation. The Guardian describes much of this activity as “obviously extremely illegal” and says easier access could have major consequences for publishers whose code becomes available online.
