Sydney audiences are being invited to embark on a remarkable musical journey across cultures, continents and centuries when the Andalus Arabic Choir presents Alexandria to Delos at the Seymour Centre on Saturday, 26 September 2026.
Taking place at the Everest Theatre at 7:30pm, the concert promises much more than an evening of music. Alexandria to Delos explores the cultural connections that have linked the peoples of the Mediterranean for generations, bringing together Arabic, Byzantine, Sufi and Andalusian musical traditions in one powerful performance.
The journey begins in Alexandria, Egypt, historically one of the Mediterranean’s great cosmopolitan centres. From there, the music travels westward through North Africa towards Andalusia in Spain and eastward across the Mediterranean before arriving at the Greek island of Delos — traditionally associated with Apollo, the Greek god of music, light and the arts.
At the heart of the concert is an important message: cultures do not develop in isolation. For centuries, music moved alongside people, ideas and trade, allowing Arabic maqams, North African rhythms, Byzantine styles, Sufi influences and European traditions to interact and inspire one another.
Alexandria to Delos brings those connections to life on stage, celebrating a shared Mediterranean heritage while showcasing the richness and sophistication of Arabic music.
The concert is led by Conductor and Artistic Director Ghada Daher-Elmowy, with Dr Noel Elmowy as Musical Director on piano. They will be joined by an accomplished ensemble featuring oud, qanun, violin, cello, flute, tabla, drums, bass, guitar and wind instruments.
For Sydney’s multicultural community, the concert offers an opportunity not only to enjoy exceptional live music but also to experience the cultural connections that have shaped communities across the Mediterranean.
It is equally an opportunity to support local multicultural arts and artists who continue to bring Arabic culture and music to some of Sydney’s major stages.
The event is also supported by the Arabic Language & Cultures Discipline at the University of Sydney, further highlighting its cultural and educational significance.
