Baz Luhrmann has released a new documentary titled Epic: Elvis Presley in Concert, showcasing unseen footage and previously unheard audio from the King of Rock and Roll. This film serves as a follow-up to Luhrmann’s successful biopic Elvis, offering audiences a unique glimpse into the life and performances of Elvis Presley.

In the spring of 1972, a film crew trailed Elvis Presley everywhere he went to capture a pivotal moment in his career – his first tour in nearly a decade. Jerry Schilling, a close confidant of Elvis, noted that an interview intended for filming never materialized. However, they managed to record about 40 minutes of candid conversation with Elvis, which remained largely hidden due to the concerns of his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. According to The Guardian, significant portions of this audio are now included in Luhrmann’s new film, allowing Elvis to narrate his own story.

Luhrmann describes the film as a “dreamscape poem of Elvis,” integrating the found footage with the audio to create a unique viewing experience. The documentary employs a hallucinogenic style, reminiscent of Luhrmann’s previous works, and aims to reinvent the musical genre for contemporary audiences. This innovative approach was made possible by extensive archival research, which uncovered 59 hours of never-before-seen film negatives from Warner Bros.

The film not only highlights Elvis’s dynamic performances but also his interactions with musicians and the audience. Elvis’s ability to engage with his band and adapt songs in real-time is emphasized, showcasing his talent as both a performer and a producer. The documentary features energetic renditions of songs like Polk Salad Annie and Burning Love, as well as gospel numbers that reveal his vocal range.
