Families in Belfast are grappling with the aftermath of a violent night that saw homes and vehicles set ablaze following protests related to a knife attack. One resident, Jamie Corrie, expressed his devastation after watching his home of 13 years burn down, stating it was a feeling he would “never get over.” According to BBC News, the chaos erupted after a man was attacked, leading to public unrest across the city.

The violence erupted after a man named Stephen Ogilvy was seriously injured in the attack, prompting protests that turned destructive. Corrie’s home was engulfed in flames after a car belonging to “foreign nationals” who lived next door was set on fire. He lamented the loss of sentimental belongings that can never be replaced.

The unrest led to the suspension of public transport services, with schools in the area also closing early as a precaution. The Police Service of Northern Ireland has increased its presence on the streets in response to the escalating situation. Three arrests have been made in connection to the violence, with additional arrests occurring in Scotland.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer condemned the violence that followed the initial attack, emphasizing the need for calm and order. He reiterated that while the community’s anger is justified, the destructive actions taken are unacceptable. Local leaders are urging peaceful protests as a way forward, highlighting the contributions of migrant communities to society amidst the chaos.
