According to BBC News, cryptocurrency exchange Binance said $6.3bn (£4.7bn) of digital assets have been impacted in what has been described as the “largest hack in history”. The company said roughly half of the assets had been frozen with help from other platforms and said it would “cover all losses”.

Binance said early checks indicated that an engineer’s compromised laptop may have enabled an attacker to make unauthorised withdrawals. The incident concerns Binance.com, while Binance.US, a smaller platform serving American residents, said it was not affected.

TRM Labs attributed the attack to a North Korean hacking unit called TraderTraitor, saying it made that judgement with high confidence. The AI-powered investigations company said elements of the incident resembled earlier North Korean-linked attacks, including the 2025 Bybit hack, which involved $1.5bn. TRM Labs chief policy officer Ari Redbord described the Binance incident as a “watershed moment” and said the attacker still holds a large sum of stolen assets.

Binance said it was working with law-enforcement partners to identify those responsible. Co-chief executive Yi He said withdrawals were disabled until the environment was confirmed secure. Tether and Circle said they had frozen about $2.4bn in assets combined, while Coinbase said it was unaffected. Bitcoin fell by more than 4% following the alerts, and Ethereum and Solana also dropped sharply.
