According to The Guardian, Brighton & Hove Albion marked their 125th anniversary with a 3-0 home win over champions Arsenal on Saturday. Pascal Gross opened the scoring in the 31st minute, Charalampos Kostoulas added a second on the stroke of half-time and Chema Andrés made it 3-0 from a corner in the 57th minute.

Brighton were described as having utterly outplayed Arsenal on the south coast, with the scoreline said to flatter the champions. Arsenal had chances after the interval, but Kai Havertz sent a weak effort straight at Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, while Matt O’Riley was unable to convert when clean through against David Raya.

The result lifted Brighton to third in the Premier League table after five matches, on 10 points and with a goal difference of plus 11. Arsenal, who had won their first seven games in all competitions before the match, remained second on 12 points after five league fixtures. Manchester City moved to the top without playing, ahead of hosting Sunderland on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Everton beat Ipswich Town 1-0 through Thierno Barry’s 11th-minute goal. Everton also had a later Barry header disallowed after VAR judged Brennan Johnson, standing in an offside position, had interfered with Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton. Ipswich’s Abdul Fatawu was sent off after receiving two yellow cards, the second for a dive.

Newcastle United defeated Hull City 2-1 at St James’ Park. Joe Willock scored in the third minute and Hall struck four minutes later before Mohamed-Ali Cho pulled one back in the 67th minute. Newcastle had missed a penalty through Yoane Wissa and held on to rise to eighth, while Hull stood seventh.
