Business groups have expressed concerns over the Coalition’s proposal to significantly lower net overseas migration numbers. According to ABC News, industry representatives argue that maintaining current migration levels is crucial for the economy’s health and for meeting labor demands.

Opposition Leader Angus Taylor has suggested that migration should be aligned with housing availability, proposing a policy that would limit net migration to one person per newly built home. This move is intended to address housing shortages and ensure that young Australians have better access to homes. Taylor emphasized that the Coalition’s approach would provide a cap on migration based on housing capacity.

The Australian Industry Group (AiG) has expressed concerns about the proposed cuts, stating that skilled migration is essential for filling gaps in the labor market. AiG chief executive Innes Willox highlighted the importance of timely and efficient skills migration to support business growth and adapt to changing economic conditions.

The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has also joined the conversation, stressing the need for a balanced and sustainable migration policy. Acting chief executive David Alexander noted that a well-designed migration program can yield significant economic benefits, and he urged policymakers to consider the needs of businesses in migration discussions.

Moreover, the Property Council of Australia has pointed out the need for skilled migrants in sectors like construction, emphasizing that the current migration policy should focus on attracting young tradespeople and care workers. They argue that addressing these skill shortages is vital for supporting the economy and public services in the face of an aging population.

As the debate continues, the Coalition plans to finalize its migration strategy if elected to government, leaving many in the business community concerned about the potential impact on the economy and labor market.
