Dear community,

Lakemba Nights during Ramadan is well underway, and once again our City has come alive with colour, flavour and an atmosphere of genuine togetherness.

Thousands of people from all across Sydney join us on Haldon Street on every night of the event, making it clear that this event has grown into one of Sydney’s most vibrant celebrations of culture, community and harmony.

Our Grand Iftar was a true highlight. I was proud to stand among people of all ages, faiths and backgrounds as they came together to share a meal, enjoy new flavours and connect with neighbours.

I watched families who had never met before sitting side by side, breaking bread and forming new friendships – an experience that speaks to the very heart of what Ramadan embodies: reflection, generosity and community spirit.

Despite the noise we sometimes hear from outside voices, the reality on our streets tells a very different story. Lakemba is safe, proud and thriving. Our community is hardworking, generous and united – qualities recognised internationally when Haldon Street received Purple Flag accreditation for its safe and diverse night‑time economy.

Lakemba Nights is not just about the incredible food, from camel burgers to Palestinian knafeh and fresh sugarcane juice, but about the sense of belonging it inspires. It shows how diversity makes us stronger and how much we can achieve when we come together.

Haven’t been yet? Come and join us in Haldon Street on Thursday to Sunday nights, with the last night on Sunday 15 March.  Bring your friends and family, and experience the joy, flavours and traditions that make our City so special.

Warm Regards,
Mayor Bilal El‑Hayek
