According to ABC News, South Australian PE teacher Tyler Wagner has been named the 2026 AFL Fantasy champion after his team, Wagmantle, held a three-point lead in a tense finish. Wagner, a 28-year-old from the Riverland and a longtime Fremantle Dockers supporter, had played the online competition for 13 years and said he had not expected to win.

The result remained uncertain until the final moments. Wagner said opposing side The Powerhouse could have taken the title with a single statistic, as the ball approached its player Jarman Impey. Impey dropped the mark, but Wagner said he was still worried about possible late AFL statistic corrections after the siren. His friends “went absolutely mental”, while he paced the hallway waiting for confirmation.

AFL Fantasy lets users coach virtual teams of players who score points for their real-life performances within an allocated budget. About 140,000 Australians compete each year. The 2026 prize included $20,000, two AFL Grand Final tickets and a car. Wagner said pupils in the year four, five and six group he teaches had followed his campaign, teasing him when his ranking fell and celebrating when it improved.

Wagner, an A-grade footballer who has played AFL Fantasy since 2014, plans to take his father to the Grand Final if Fremantle qualifies. The Dockers finished 2026 as minor premiers and are seeking their first premiership after reaching the Grand Final only once, in 2013. Fantasy football expert Ryan “Heff” Gerlach said winning against 140,000 competitors required knowledge as well as luck, estimating the game was 60 per cent strategy and 40 per cent luck.
