According to BBC News, England have omitted Durham seamer Brydon Carse from their 15-man squad for the third and final Test against Pakistan at Edgbaston. The 31-year-old was also left out for the second Test at Lord’s after he was briefly arrested following an incident outside a Derby nightclub on 22 August. Derbyshire police are continuing to investigate an allegation of assault connected with the incident.
Carse’s replacement in the group, 23-year-old Sonny Baker, keeps his place for the Birmingham match. Surrey bowler Matthew Fisher has been dropped from an otherwise unchanged squad as England target a clean sweep of the series. The third Test is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, 9 September, at 11:00 BST.
England have already secured the series after beating Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs at Headingley before following that with a 194-run victory at Lord’s. With six white-ball matches against Sri Lanka coming after the Test series, England may rest seamers Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue, despite all three being selected in the squad.
Baker, Essex pace bowler Sam Cook and Derbyshire spinner Shoaib Bashir could be options if rotation is used. Cook’s only Test came against Zimbabwe last summer, while Bashir has not played in the current series, in which England have used an all-pace attack. Baker made his only Test appearance in a much-changed side against New Zealand at The Oval in June.
Carse remains available for Durham and took match figures of 4-95 in their win over Gloucestershire last week, although he was not picked in their XI for the Northamptonshire match that began on Wednesday. Pakistan have also made major changes before Edgbaston, dropping seven players, calling up five uncapped players and replacing head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed with white-ball coach Mike Hesson.
