According to ABC News, cellist Charlotte Miles has won the 2026 ABC Young Performers Awards after performing Elgar’s Cello Concerto in the competition grand final at the Sydney Opera House on November 3. Miles performed with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Benjamin Northey.
The 24-year-old cellist, originally from Victoria, progressed through two competitive rounds after the competition opened in February. She has been studying in the Kronberg Academy’s professional program in Germany and returned to Australia to compete in the grand final. The award is the latest in more than 100 music prizes for Miles.
Miles regularly guests with the Berlin Philharmonic and was selected earlier this year to tour with French cellist Gautier Capuçon. Speaking to ABC Classic’s Genevieve Lang after her performance, Miles said: “I felt really calm out there. I dared to share what I wanted to share with the audience and gave it everything.”
Violinist Beatrice Colombis was named runner-up after performing Prokofiev’s Second Violin Concerto. Pianist Dillon Chan took third place with Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Colombis is 23, while Chan, 14, was the youngest finalist.
The winner receives a $40,000 cash prize and an opportunity to record a solo studio album under the ABC Classic label. The runner-up receives $15,000 and the third-place recipient receives $5,000. The live ABC Classic broadcast was hosted by Lang, and the concert will be shown on ABC TV and ABC iview on November 5, hosted by Jeremy Fernandez and Megan Burslem.
