The annual Clean Energy Australia report offers an in-depth analysis of the country’s clean energy sector. The 2024 edition reveals that renewable sources made up nearly 40% of Australia’s electricity supply in 2023, specifically 39.4%. The report also highlights a notable increase in generation capacity, with 5.9 GW (giga watts) added compared to 5 GW (giga watts) in 2022.
Key Highlights from the Clean Energy Australia 2024 Report:
- Renewables contributed 39.4% of Australia’s total electricity supply.
- 5.9 GW (giga watts) of new renewable generation capacity was introduced in 2023.
- Of this, 2.8 GW of large-scale renewable generation capacity was completed and integrated into the grid.
- The rooftop solar sector saw an addition of 3.1 GW (giga watts) from 337,498 households and small businesses.
- At the end of 2023, 27 utility-scale batteries were under construction, totalling 5 GW / 11 GWh combined capacity, a significant increase from 19 batteries with 1.4 GW / 2 GWh in 2022.
- Investments in large-scale storage reached $4.9 billion in 2023, up from $1.9 billion in 2022.
- There were no new financial commitments to utility-scale wind projects in 2023, down from six in 2022.
- Seven new financial commitments were made for large-scale solar projects, totalling 921 MW, a decrease from ten projects and 1.5 GW in 2022.
