According to ABC News, a gymnastics coach has been stood down after an alleged physical assault of a child at Splitz Gym in Sumner Park, Brisbane. Queensland Police are investigating the allegation, while Gymnastics Australia and Gymnastics Queensland are also examining what they describe as a serious child safeguarding allegation involving a coach.

Queensland Police said officers from the Inala Child Protection and Investigation Unit received a report of an assault at a business address on Jijaws Street on 5 October. A police spokesperson said the investigation remained ongoing following reports of an alleged assault on a child. No arrests have been made and no charges have been laid.

Gym officials said the matter was escalated to Gymnastics Australia and the Queensland Police Service last week after information was received alleging a serious safeguarding breach. Gymnastics Australia said the club had followed mandatory reporting requirements and that the issue was quickly referred to the relevant authorities.

In an email to parents of children who attended the gym, Gymnastics Australia said the full facts were under review and stressed that the matter remained an allegation. Splitz Gym immediately suspended the coach allegedly involved pending the investigation. Gymnastics Australia also imposed a provisional suspension on the coach working at any other affiliated clubs until the allegations are fully investigated.

Gymnastics Australia said it had “zero tolerance for any behaviour that places members or children at risk” and said it and Gymnastics Queensland were focused on supporting the local community. Sport Integrity Australia said it could not comment. Splitz Gym was also contacted.
