The Lebanese Independence Movement Sydney Australia (Harakat Al Istiklal Inc.) came together to honour the memory of the late Martyred President Rene Moawad and his companions during a poignant service held at Our Lady of Lebanon Co-Cathedral, Harris Park, on Sunday, November 24th, 2024. Marking the 35th Annual Memorial Service, this significant event paid tribute to the spirit of resilience and independence embodied by President Moawad.

The ceremony began at 11:00 am, drawing attendees from across the community, united in their collective remembrance of a man who became a symbol of hope and national unity. President Moawad, assassinated in 1989, is remembered for his dedication to Lebanon’s sovereignty, stability, and for his commitment to bridging divisions within his beloved country. The memorial event in Sydney echoed these values, reminding all of the importance of independence and harmony in times of challenge.

Held in the solemn surroundings of Our Lady of Lebanon Co-Cathedral, the ceremony featured heartfelt prayers, speeches, and reflections on Moawad’s vision for Lebanon. Attendees were visibly moved as they remembered his determination to rebuild Lebanon, a vision tragically cut short by his assassination just 17 days after taking office. His enduring message of peace and unity still resonates strongly with the Lebanese diaspora, many of whom have experienced first-hand the trials of political turmoil.

Representing Oz Arab Media at the event was Elie Kaltoum Rahme, who spoke passionately about the role of the media in continuing to share the narratives of those who sacrificed their lives for Lebanon’s independence. Rahme highlighted the importance of keeping the memory of President Moawad alive, especially among the younger generations of Lebanese-Australians, to ensure that his vision continues to inspire future efforts towards unity and peace.

The memorial was more than a commemoration—it was a call to action for those in attendance. The Lebanese Independence Movement, through events such as this, continues to uphold the values of independence and national pride, encouraging the Lebanese community in Australia to remain connected to their heritage while contributing positively to the multicultural fabric of Australia. The ceremony closed with an earnest reminder of President Moawad’s legacy—a call for solidarity, unity, and an unwavering commitment to freedom.

As the community gathered around a shared memory, the spirit of President Rene Moawad and his vision for a peaceful Lebanon was rekindled, affirming the enduring bond between the Lebanese homeland and its diaspora in Sydney.
