Tributes have begun to flow for Kumanjayi Little Baby in Alice Springs after the discovery of her body. The five-year-old girl, referred to as Kumanjayi Little Baby for cultural reasons, was found on Thursday, prompting an outpouring of grief from the community. According to ABC News, Kumanjayi went missing from Alice Springs’ Old Timers town camp late on Saturday, sparking a five-day search.
Police believe Kumanjayi was abducted and murdered by 47-year-old Jefferson Lewis, who remains at large. The girl’s body was located about five kilometers south of a crime scene in the town camp, marking a tragic turn in the case.
In the wake of the news, mourners have gathered at a makeshift shrine at the Old Timers town camp, leaving flowers, cards, and candles in memory of Kumanjayi. Community members have expressed their condolences, with Kumanjayi’s grandfather, Robin Japanangka Granites, present to comfort those grieving.
Walter Shaw, chief executive of the Tangentyere Council, stated that “everyone’s hearts are broken” and requested respect for the family’s cultural protocols during this time of mourning. Independent MLA Robyn Lambley, who participated in the search, described the outcome as “utter devastation,” emphasizing the profound impact on the town and Kumanjayi’s family.
A vigil is scheduled at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where community members are invited to light candles in memory of Kumanjayi Little Baby. The loss resonates deeply within the community, with many reflecting on the need to protect children from harm.
