Cumberland City Council is set to transform Merrylands into a vibrant hub of music, dance, and cultural celebration on Saturday 22 March 2025 from 7pm to 10pm as the community gathers to mark Nowruz — the Persian New Year and a festival celebrated for over 3,000 years.

This free community event invites people of all backgrounds to embrace the spirit of renewal and unity through traditional music, colourful cultural performances, and authentic dance displays. A celebration deeply rooted in the histories of Iran, Afghanistan, Central Asia, and surrounding regions, Nowruz signals the arrival of spring and symbolises new beginnings.

Cumberland Mayor Ola Hamed extended a warm invitation to the wider community, encouraging everyone to experience the joy and meaning of Nowruz firsthand.

“Nowruz is a wonderful celebration of renewal, marking the beginning of a new season,” Mayor Hamed said. “Council’s event aims to foster unity, offering a chance for our community to come together and explore the diverse traditions that enrich Cumberland.”

The program promises an unforgettable evening of cultural entertainment, with main stage performances by the Hathor Iranian Dance Ensemble, music by DJ Allen, and live sets from the Nayestan Music Band and Ability Beyond Boundaries. Adding to the festivities, attendees can enjoy a variety of community stalls, food vendors, and market stalls showcasing traditional flavours and crafts.

Mayor Hamed emphasised the importance of such events in strengthening the social fabric of the community.

“These event gatherings help strengthen our connections, deepen our understanding, and celebrate the shared humanity that brings us all together.”

Road Closure Notice: Please note that Merrylands Road between Addlestone Road and Memorial Avenue will be closed from 7am on Saturday 22 March and will reopen at 2am on Sunday 23 March 2025 to facilitate the event.

Don’t miss this family-friendly evening celebrating cultural harmony, the arrival of spring, and the rich tapestry of Cumberland’s multicultural community.
