According to BBC News, former England captain Lawrence Dallaglio’s 2003 Rugby World Cup winner’s medal has sold for £54,000 at auction. The 54-year-old was part of England’s World Cup-winning squad and played at number eight in the final against Australia.

Dallaglio put medals, trophies and caps from his career up for sale after being declared bankrupt. The auction was held at Budd’s in Northamptonshire, where the items that sold raised a total of £100,500.

A British and Irish Lions cap sold for £11,000, while an England cap fetched £8,000. Dallaglio’s 2003 Six Nations Championship winner’s medal was sold for £7,500. His collection had been estimated at £180,000.

Some lots did not sell, including medals from Dallaglio’s four Premiership title wins with Wasps. Earlier this month, he discussed his bankruptcy on The High Performance Podcast, saying it followed his divorce and financial problems. He also said he sought therapy after the divorce and bankruptcy left him wallowing in “self-pity”.
