Nelio Biedermann’s debut novel, *Lázár*, presents an ambitious narrative that intertwines the fate of a single family with the tumultuous history of 20th-century Hungary. This gothic-inflected tale, which has garnered attention across Europe, is particularly striking given that its author was born in 2003 and has no personal memory of the events he depicts. According to The Guardian, Biedermann’s work represents a fresh voice among the first wave of Gen Z writers.

The story begins in an isolated manor house, where Lajos, a peculiar child, is born into the Lázár family. This noble lineage is marked by madness and violent deaths, setting the stage for a tale steeped in secrets and familial turmoil. Lajos’s true parentage is shrouded in mystery, stemming from an illicit affair between Maria, the lady of the manor, and a groom who meets a tragic end. This secret remains buried with Maria, adding layers to Lajos’s identity.

As the narrative unfolds, it reveals the family’s entanglement with historical upheavals, spanning from the Habsburg Empire to the rise of fascism and Soviet influence. The Lázárs, once part of the privileged elite, face the repercussions of their status in a changing political landscape. The novel captures the experiences of successive generations, including Lajos and his siblings, as they navigate the challenges posed by their heritage and the socio-political climate.

Translated by the prolific German-language translator Jamie Bulloch, *Lázár* offers a vivid portrayal of repression, love, and trauma, showcasing Biedermann’s ability to blend personal and historical narratives. The characters grapple with their desires and the weight of their lineage, with the patriarch Sandor’s struggles with alcoholism serving as a poignant reflection of the family’s decline.

Despite its strengths, the novel’s episodic structure occasionally detracts from its overall impact, leading to a series of static scenes that lack dynamic character interactions. Nonetheless, Biedermann’s writing is rich with allusions to literary giants, suggesting a promising future for this young author as he carves out his place in the literary world.
