A group of young men from Doomadgee, a remote town in Gangalidda Country, have launched their debut EP, inspired by their heritage and language. The band, known as the DMC (Doomadgee Mission Community) Boys, aims to represent their community and motivate young people to pursue their passions. According to ABC News, their first EP, titled “Yugurlda People,” features songs that blend Gangalidda stories in both language and English.

The DMC Boys, consisting of six members including lead singer Elijah Douglas, came together over a shared interest in music, despite most having no prior experience. They began their musical journey two years ago, learning to play instruments and write songs at the Doomadgee Youth Hub’s community recording studio, which has become central to their creative process.

Mentorship played a significant role in their development. Musician Dale Mallett, who has been working with the group since 2019, helped them realize their musical aspirations. Mallett noted the rapid progress of the band members, with some, like drummer Ashley Dumaji, quickly mastering their instruments.

The band has already performed in Burketown and neighboring areas, receiving a warm welcome from their community, which has embraced their emerging talent. The DMC Boys are not only focused on sharing their music but also plan to mentor other young musicians in remote areas, just as they were mentored.

With their unique sound that fuses Indigenous rock with reggae influences, the DMC Boys are committed to sharing their culture and identity through music. They are currently working on new material, including another EP and an album, slated for release later this year.
