Arabic version: مقتل سائق في غارة استهدفت شاحنات مساعدات لبرنامج الأغذية العالمي في جنوب كردفان
According to Allafrica, a driver was killed when two clearly marked World Food Programme aid trucks were hit in an airstrike in South Kordofan, Sudan, early on Saturday.
The contracted trucks were carrying WFP food commodities between Dilling and Kadugli. WFP said it was still determining the circumstances of the incident and the extent of damage to the food cargo.
The agency strongly condemned the attack and called for a prompt, impartial investigation, with those responsible held to account. It said the strike followed an incident the previous day in which a WFP truck hit an explosive device in Dilling after delivering food assistance.
WFP said the incidents highlighted an increasingly challenging security environment and the risks faced by aid workers delivering life-saving assistance. The Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, formerly allies, have been fighting since April 2023.
More than 30 million people needed humanitarian assistance in Sudan last year, according to the UN aid coordination office OCHA. WFP urged all parties involved in the fighting to uphold international humanitarian law, protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, and allow safe, unimpeded access for humanitarian workers and cargo.
