Epworth Hospital has announced a comprehensive review of its clinical governance following serious allegations against Dr. Simon Gordon, a gynaecologist accused of performing unnecessary surgeries for endometriosis. The review will be led by South Australian health commissioner Professor Keith McNeil, who is recognized for his expertise in clinical governance and system reform.
According to ABC News, this inquiry comes in the wake of a Four Corners report that raised concerns about Dr. Gordon’s practices, suggesting he operated on patients despite pathology reports indicating minimal or no endometriosis present. Dr. Gordon maintains he always acted ethically and responsibly and told the ABC he, “never performed surgery to treat endometriosis or any other condition unless I was absolutely convinced it was in the patient’s best interest and to improve their overall quality of life.”
The review panel will also include Beverley Vollenhoven, a leading gynaecologist, and Professor Alan Lam, both of whom bring extensive experience in women’s health and clinical governance. The inquiry aims to evaluate how gynaecological services are managed at the hospital, including the credentialing of doctors and the handling of patient concerns.
In response to previous criticism regarding patient involvement, Epworth Hospital has committed to writing to former patients of Dr. Gordon to inform them about available support services and to provide access to their medical records at no charge. The hospital’s leadership expressed their commitment to addressing the concerns raised and emphasized the importance of transparency in the review process.
Additionally, the medical regulator AHPRA is conducting its own investigation into Dr. Gordon, reviewing past complaints and requesting extensive medical records related to his practice. The Victorian government has also established a support line through Women’s Health Victoria for patients affected by these allegations.
