Arabic version: أوروبا تواجه حرارة قياسية مع تصاعد التدابير الطارئة
Europe is currently experiencing an unprecedented heatwave, with temperatures soaring to record levels across several nations. The UK is forecasted to reach 38°C, prompting dire warnings from officials. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has described London as “cooking” and called for urgent action on fossil fuels during his address at London Climate Action Week. According to The Guardian, the heatwave has raised significant concerns about public health and energy supply.
France has recorded its hottest night since records began in 1947, with average temperatures hitting 21.6°C. The situation has led to the issuance of red alerts across half of the country, following several heat-related deaths. Emergency meetings are being convened, as the government grapples with the rising health risks associated with the extreme heat.
Spain is also under severe heat alerts, with parts of the country experiencing extraordinary danger levels. The national weather agency has issued warnings for various regions, including Cordoba and Bilbao, where temperatures are expected to reach up to 40°C. The heat has caused a surge in electricity prices across Europe, as demand for cooling skyrockets and renewable energy production declines due to stagnant wind conditions.
In response to the heatwave, fire services in the UK have cautioned against outdoor burning activities to prevent wildfires. Authorities are urging the public to stay hydrated and limit outdoor exposure during peak temperatures. As the heatwave moves eastward, Poland is preparing for its own temperature spikes, with forecasts suggesting highs of 38°C in Warsaw this weekend, potentially breaking historical records.
