According to BBC News, Arthur Fery missed out on his first ATP Tour title after losing 6-3 6-2 to Peru’s Ignacio Buse in the Winston-Salem Open final.

The 24-year-old Briton was the first British player to reach the final of the ATP 250 tournament in North Carolina. Despite the defeat, Fery will rise to world number 33 on Monday and overtake Cameron Norrie as British number one.

Fery had been ranked outside the top 100 only eight weeks ago, before reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals in July. In Saturday’s final, the early stages were closely contested before Buse broke to love for a 5-3 lead. The Peruvian then established a double-break advantage in the second set.

Fery recovered one break, but Buse won three consecutive games to complete the victory. The 22-year-old became the youngest-ever Winston-Salem champion and claimed his second career title, following his win over American Tommy Paul at the ATP 500 event in Hamburg in May.

Fery now heads to New York for the US Open, which begins on Sunday. Playing at Flushing Meadows for the first time, he will face Italian 13th seed Lorenzo Musetti in the opening round.
