Construction has commenced on the first stage of the Finlaysons Creek Trail, marking a major milestone in the creation of a new regional pedestrian and cyclist corridor in western Sydney.
Stage 1 works include a new 40-metre-long bridge and boardwalk to connect both sides of Shannons Paddock, as well as separate walking and cycling paths, lighting, seating and new shade trees.
Once complete, the $14.1 million project will deliver a new accessible connection under the Main Western Rail Line, linking Shannons Paddock to Lytton Park in Wentworthville and completing a key section of the active transport network between the M4 Shared Path, Parramatta Park and the Norwest T-Way Shared Path.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Cameron Maclean said the start of construction was an important step towards delivering one of the City’s most significant active transport projects.
“Seeing shovels in the ground is an exciting milestone for this long-awaited project, bringing us a step closer to our vision to transform Shannons Paddock into a district-level recreational space,” Cr Maclean said.
“Once complete, the trail will close a critical gap in Western Sydney’s cycling network, creating a safer and more accessible route that connects the local Cumberland and Parramatta neighbourhoods, parks and major attractions.
“We’ve listened to the community to strengthen the design and create a truly green corridor that people of all ages can enjoy, whether they’re walking, riding, commuting or simply spending time outdoors.”
State Member for Parramatta Donna Davis MP said: “This NSW Government investment will make it easier for people of all ages and abilities to access the Finlaysons Creek corridor by walking, cycling or scooting.
“We want more people to have the confidence to jump on a bike to get from A to B, so providing bike facilities, better wayfinding, shading and rest areas will help to achieve this.”
Designs for Stages 2 and 3 were approved in August and include new rest points, bike racks, a bike repair station, wayfinding signage, as well as new tree planting and more extensive bushland restoration along the creek corridor.
Stage 1 works are expected to be complete in 2027.
The project is funded by City of Parramatta and the NSW Government through the Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants and Get NSW Active Programs.
