According to BBC News, five people have died and dozens were injured after a tourist coach carrying Dutch nationals crashed in the south-eastern Swiss Alps.

The bus struck a safety barrier in a roadworks area, left the road and overturned between Susch and Zernez in the Graubünden region late on Thursday afternoon. Police said the five people who died had not yet been identified.

The other 40 people on board were taken to hospitals by rescue helicopters and ambulance crews. Their injuries ranged from serious to minor, with Graubünden cantonal police saying three people were seriously injured.

The coach reportedly departed the Netherlands on Monday and was on a day trip to Switzerland from Austria when the crash occurred. Seven helicopters from Switzerland and Austria joined fire departments and the Plaiv road rescue service in the response.

Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten said his thoughts were with everyone involved. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima said their hearts went out to all affected by “this great tragedy”, while Swiss President Guy Parmelin said he was deeply shocked and offered condolences to victims’ families. Graubünden police and the public prosecutor’s office are investigating the circumstances of the crash.
