According to ABC News, the driver of a rubbish truck that struck and killed an elderly pedestrian in Queens Park, in Perth’s south-east, has been charged.

Police said the 59-year-old driver, from Riverton, has been charged with dangerous driving causing death. The driver is due to appear in court in November.

Chinese national An Yu, 70, suffered critical injuries after being hit by the truck on Balaka Way on September 7. He was taken to hospital but died.

CCTV footage showed Mr Yu walking along Balaka Way before the truck reversed into him and knocked him down. Neighbours described him as a quiet, sweet man who walked slowly following a stroke several years ago, and said they regularly saw him on morning and afternoon walks.

Residents said Balaka Way was an unfinished cul-de-sac with a development site at its end, making it difficult for trucks to turn around. Canning mayor Patrick Hall said the city would take appropriate steps to improve safety on the road if required.
