According to ABC News, Ethiopia’s Addisu Gobena won the 2026 Sydney Marathon in a record 2:04:42 as more than 40,000 people took part. The first tranche of runners began the 42.2-kilometre route from North Sydney to the Opera House at 6:15am.

Gobena, who finished second in Sydney last year, cut more than one minute from 2025 winner Hailemaryam Kiros’s time of 2:06:06. His performance was the fastest marathon completed by a male athlete in Australia. Chimdessa Debele Gudeta took silver and Tebello Ramakongoana finished third, with both runners also going under the previous race record.

Kenya’s Peres Jepchirchir won the women’s race in 2:18:31, finishing 3 minutes and 40 seconds ahead of Irine Cheptai. Shure Demise Ware was third. Jepchirchir, the reigning world champion, finished just outside the course record of 2:18:22 set by Sifan Hassan in 2025.

In the wheelchair events, American Daniel Romanchuk was first across the finish line in 1:26:50, breaking Marcel Hug’s previous record of 1:27:15. Paralympic athlete Manuela Schär won the women’s wheelchair race in a record 1:42:04, taking 2 minutes and 48 seconds off Susannah Scaroni’s course record. Schär became the first athlete to win on all eight Abbott World Marathon Majors courses.

Andy Buchanan was the first Australian male finisher in 2:10:14, while Ellie Pashley was the first Australian woman home in 2:28:28. Five Dock’s Toby Fuller completed the marathon in 3 hours and 18 minutes to secure a Guinness World Records title as the fastest chemotherapy patient to finish a marathon. More than $14 million was raised for charity during the event, the second consecutive year Sydney has held Abbott World Marathon Major status.
