Arabic version: مطحنة تاريخية في ليك engulfed by Major Fire
A major fire has broken out at The Big Mill, a historic site in Leek, Staffordshire, on Friday evening. According to BBC News, the Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service responded promptly, deploying six fire engines to the scene at 21:22 GMT on Friday.
Fire officials urged residents to keep their windows and doors shut and advised against driving near the former silk mill to avoid hindering emergency operations. By Saturday, the flames were largely extinguished, but crews remained on-site to address a substantial number of hotspots, with operations expected to continue for some time.
The Big Mill, a Grade II listed building dating back to 1860, has been derelict since 2007. It was last utilized as a mill in the 1980s before serving as a pine manufacturer and workshop. Local councillor Bill Cawley noted that the site had a history of hazards and antisocial behavior, prompting previous warnings about safety concerns.
Residents expressed shock at the devastation of a structure they regarded as a vital part of Leek’s history. Many lamented the lack of redevelopment efforts, with some fearing that demolition may now be the only option left. Staffordshire Police announced that Mill Street and surrounding areas would remain closed for some time, affecting local businesses and deliveries.
MP Dame Karen Bradley expressed her sadness over the incident, thanking emergency services for their efforts and hoping for the safety of all involved. The fire has left the community contemplating the future of a site that holds significant historical value.
