According to ABC News, homicide squad detectives are investigating the death of an eight-month-old baby girl after she was found unresponsive at a residential address in Redan, Ballarat, on Sunday. Emergency services attended the property and Victoria Police said CPR was administered before the child was taken to Ballarat hospital shortly after 1pm.

The baby was later transferred to a Melbourne hospital, where she died on Tuesday. Police said a 23-year-old man had been interviewed and released, while the Homicide Squad continued its investigation. Detectives are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.

Child and Family Services chief executive Wendy Sturgess described the death as “absolutely tragic” and said it had caused widespread hurt in the community. “It impacts everybody who has been involved with the baby,” she said. “It’s our job to keep children safe, especially babies.”

ABC News reported it understood the baby had been living with foster parents before being returned to her biological parents. Ms Sturgess said there was “absolute sadness and disappointment” over the circumstances, adding that those words did not fully convey the impact of the death.
