Arabic version: المستشفى يواجه تدقيقًا بعد مقتل طفلين في فترة قصيرة
Blackpool Victoria Hospital is under scrutiny following the tragic deaths of two toddlers within a short period. Thirteen-month-old Preston Davey was brought to the hospital by his adoptive father after suffering fatal abuse. The day before Preston’s visit, another toddler, two-year-old Damion Russell, was seen at the same hospital before being murdered by his father.
According to BBC News, both children had been recently placed with their parents after being removed from foster care. Preston was subjected to severe abuse by his adoptive father, Jamie Varley, a Blackpool high school teacher, before he died on July 27, 2023. Varley was convicted of murder and a raft of other charges including rape and hit with a whole life prison term.
Damion Russell’s case has also raised alarms, as a safeguarding review revealed that hospital staff failed to inquire about a bruise on his head before his death. His father, Daniel Hardcastle, was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder, which involved a brutal attack that left the child with numerous injuries.
Local MPs have called for a public inquiry to investigate potential safeguarding failures related to both cases. The trust managing Blackpool Victoria has stated that it is committed to improving practices and ensuring that medical staff are adequately trained to identify and question concerning injuries.
The hospital’s chief executive emphasized the importance of thorough examinations for young children brought to the emergency department, pledging to implement necessary changes based on the findings of the ongoing review into Preston’s death.
