Arabic version: إندونيسيا تطلق أول برنامج تلفزيوني متحرك بالكامل بواسطة الذكاء الاصطناعي
Indonesia’s first fully AI-animated television show, Legenda Bertuah, has sparked mixed reactions among viewers. The series premiered in January 2026 and features 14 half-hour episodes that adapt various Indonesian folktales. According to ABC News, the animated series showcases characters created using generative artificial intelligence, although some viewers have noted flaws in the animation, such as disjointed battle sequences and unnatural character expressions.
While some audience members praised the show for its educational value and creativity, others criticized the quality of the AI-generated content. Viewers expressed concerns about the authenticity of the human-like characters, with comments highlighting the stiffness of their expressions and the overall execution. One viewer questioned the necessity of using AI over traditional animators, suggesting that the choice might stem from budget constraints.
TRANS7, the company behind Legenda Bertuah, defended its decision to utilize AI in production. Spokesperson Mira Khairunnisa stated that the intention was not to reduce costs but to explore new tools for content creation. She emphasized that the production process involved human input at every stage, from storyboarding to video editing, with a team of about ten people involved in each episode.
The series has also stirred debate within the creative industry regarding the implications of AI in animation. Industry professionals, including those from the Indonesian Animation Industry Association, have raised questions about the definition of animation itself, arguing that the AI-generated content lacks the traditional artistic qualities associated with animated works. Concerns over job security and the ethical implications of using AI in creative processes have also been voiced by artists and directors.
As the landscape of animation continues to evolve with technological advancements, the reception of Legenda Bertuah highlights both the potential and challenges of integrating AI into the creative arts. While some view it as a valuable tool, others remain skeptical about the authenticity and emotional depth of AI-generated content.
