International students in Australia have expressed outrage after the federal government quietly doubled the application fees for temporary graduate visas. The non-refundable visa fee rose from $2,300 to $4,600 without prior warning, making it the highest in the world for graduates wishing to remain in the country after their studies. The increase took effect immediately, catching many students off guard.

According to The Guardian, students have voiced feelings of being treated like “ATMs” as they navigate the financial burden imposed by the sudden fee hike. The National Union of Students (NUS) highlighted that many graduating students are now uncertain about their ability to afford to stay in Australia following their studies, which sends a troubling message about their standing in Australian society.

Jimmy, an engineering graduate, described his devastation upon discovering the fee increase on the Home Affairs website, noting the lack of a transitional grace period for students whose visas are expiring soon. He emphasized that this move represents a breach of trust and could severely damage Australia’s international reputation.

The visa allows international students who have completed eligible qualifications to live and work full-time in Australia. Critics, including the Greens party, have accused the government of exploiting international students, with some arguing the increase in fees could hinder their ability to contribute to the economy.

This recent fee increase follows a series of reforms affecting the international student sector, including a prior hike in student visa fees and changes to eligibility criteria. The council representing postgraduate associations in Australia has called for a reversal of these rules, stating that they limit opportunities for students who have already integrated into Australian society.
