Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has urged people in the United States to look beyond “a flood of distortions and manufactured narratives” and ask whose interests are being served by the US-Israeli war on Iran. In an open letter addressed to the US public and shared by Iran’s state-run broadcaster PressTV, Pezeshkian questioned whether President Donald Trump’s “America First” policy is “truly among the priorities of the US government today.”
Pezeshkian posed several rhetorical questions regarding the war’s impact, asking if the massacre of innocent children, the destruction of cancer-treatment pharmaceutical facilities, or boasting about bombing a country “back to the stone ages” serve any purpose other than further damaging the United States’ global standing. He criticized the portrayal of Iran as a threat, noting that Iran had twice been attacked while its negotiators were taking part in multilateral nuclear talks.
The Iranian leader’s remarks came shortly after Trump threatened to continue military actions against Iran unless certain conditions were met, including the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Pezeshkian’s letter emphasized Iran’s right to self-defense and rejected any notion of enmity towards the American people, while also highlighting the broader implications of the conflict, including increased instability and economic costs.
Furthermore, Pezeshkian questioned the influence of Israel on US policy, suggesting that the Trump administration may be acting as a proxy for Israeli interests in the region. He implied that Israel’s portrayal of Iran as a threat could be a strategy to divert attention from its actions against Palestinians, thereby shifting the burden of conflict onto the United States and its taxpayers. His letter reflects a growing narrative within Iran that seeks to frame the conflict in terms of self-defense against external aggression.
