Israeli security agencies are raising alarms over the escalating violence perpetrated by settlers in the occupied West Bank. Major-General Avi Bluth, the commander of Israeli military forces in the region, described the situation as a potential spark for a Palestinian uprising, labeling settler actions as “a disgrace to the Jewish people”. According to Al Jazeera, these stark warnings come against a backdrop of increasing settler attacks and the establishment of new illegal outposts.

The violence continued unabated this week, with reports of multiple fatalities among Palestinians due to Israeli military actions. On April 29, 16-year-old Ibrahim Abd al-Khayat was shot dead during a military raid in Hebron, followed by the death of Nayef Samaro on May 3 in Nablus. Settler activity also intensified, with new illegal outposts being established in Beita and Jaloud, while attacks on Palestinians were reported in various locations, injuring several individuals.

In a concerning display of the disconnect between official warnings and the actions of settlers, high-ranking officials from the Israel Police and the Israel Prison Service attended a birthday celebration for Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir, where far-right activists were present. The event featured a cake adorned with a noose, symbolizing support for a controversial death penalty bill aimed at Palestinian prisoners.

Furthermore, Israeli Minister of Finance Bezalel Smotrich confirmed that he has withheld significant funds from the Palestinian Authority, exacerbating the financial crisis faced by the governing body. Despite Major-General Bluth’s advice to release the funds to help ease tensions, Smotrich has reportedly resisted.

On the international front, the Israeli navy intercepted a humanitarian flotilla attempting to breach Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza, detaining around 175 activists. This operation, described by Israel as conducted within international law, highlights ongoing tensions surrounding humanitarian efforts in the region.
