Arabic version: خطة تسجيل الأراضي الجديدة في إسرائيل تشير إلى تحول في السيطرة على الضفة الغربية
This week, the Israeli cabinet approved a plan to claim Palestinian lands in the West Bank as “state land.” This initiative, pushed by far-right leaders including Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Justice Minister Yariv Levin, highlights Israel’s ongoing strategy to assert dominance over Palestinian territories. The government has allocated 244.1 million shekels (nearly $79 million) for the land registration project, which is seen as a continuation of Israel’s long-standing ambitions in the region.
According to Al Jazeera, this move does not represent a new escalation in the conflict but rather a solidification of Israel’s presence in the West Bank. The land registration process, which had been frozen since 1967, is now being revived, allowing Israel to further entrench its control over the territory, particularly in Area C, which constitutes more than 62 percent of the West Bank.
The implications of this policy are significant, as it shifts governance in Area C from military administration to direct Israeli civilian oversight. This bureaucratic approach to annexation signifies a strategic transition from overt military actions to administrative consolidation, marking a new phase of territorial conquest in the 21st century.
The recent measures also include new land purchase mechanisms for settlers and a reduction in oversight of these transactions. These actions collectively undermine the Palestinian Authority’s administrative control in Areas A and B, which were intended to be governed by Palestinian authorities under international agreements. This erosion of Palestinian governance raises concerns about the future of Palestinian self-determination.
As Israel continues to implement these policies, the international community’s response remains crucial. Many observers argue that the lack of accountability for Israel’s actions enables further colonial expansion. The ongoing violence against Palestinians, coupled with the bureaucratic mechanisms of dispossession, illustrates a systematic approach to undermining Palestinian rights and claims to land, potentially leading to irreversible changes in the region’s demographic and political landscape.
