According to The Guardian, Liverpool are searching for a fourth sporting director in four years after confirming that Richard Hughes has stepped down. Hughes, 47, had been expected to leave and is in line to take a similar role at Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal.
Hughes told Liverpool early this year that he intended to depart after Michael Edwards, his friend and Fenway Sports Group’s chief executive of football, left. Hughes was pictured with Arne Slot when the Dutchman became Liverpool manager in July 2024; the report said neither remains at the club.
Elsewhere in the Premier League buildup, Newcastle named Vitezslav Hornicek, Amar Dedic, Malick Thiaw, Sven Botman, Lewis Hall, Lewis Miley, Santiago Gonzalez, Anthony Elanga, Joe Willock, Harvey Barnes and Yoane Wissa for Bournemouth’s visit. Bournemouth selected Djordje Petrovic, Adam Smith, James Hill, Marcos Silva, Adrien Truffert, Tyler Adams, Alex Scott, Rayan, Justin Kluivert, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson.
Chelsea were due to face Aston Villa in the WSL, with a 12.35pm BST kick-off. Chelsea’s starting side included Hannah Hampton, Lucy Bronze, Erin Cuthbert, Keira Walsh, Aggie Beever-Jones and Lauren James. Aston Villa named Anna Okuma, Lucy Parker, Rachel Grant, Kirsty Hanson, Jill Roord and Kirsten Vangsgaard among their starters.
Uefa fined Red Star Belgrade €90,000 after supporters chanted the name of Ratko Mladic, made salutes and displayed a banner praising him during a 5-1 defeat at Viktoria Plzeň on 27 August.
