The Maine Democratic Party has announced plans to hold a convention to select a new Senate nominee following Graham Platner’s abrupt withdrawal from the race due to sexual assault allegations. Platner made his announcement in an 11-minute video posted to social media on Wednesday evening, where he expressed anger towards the Democratic establishment and media, claiming the allegations were “not remotely true” and part of a concerted effort against him.
According to The Guardian, the party is now tasked with naming a replacement by the legal deadline of July 27. Several candidates have already emerged, including former state senator Troy Jackson and Dan Kleban, the owner of Maine Beer Company.
Other potential contenders include Shenna Bellows, the Maine Secretary of State, Nirav Shah, the former director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, state legislator Valli Geiger, and ex-congressional aide Jordan Wood. Party officials expressed optimism about harnessing the enthusiasm generated by Platner’s campaign as they prepare for the upcoming election against Republican incumbent Susan Collins.
The convention is expected to draw significant interest as Democrats rally to maintain competitiveness in a crucial Senate race, particularly following the controversy surrounding Platner’s campaign.
