According to ABC News, police have charged a 27-year-old man after a high-speed pursuit through Perth’s southern suburbs that ended in multiple collisions and seriously injured an 80-year-old man in Leeming.

The elderly man was driving a white Hyundai Accent west along South Street when an unmarked police vehicle collided with his sedan as he turned right onto Beasley Road yesterday morning. He was taken to Royal Perth Hospital for treatment. Aerial footage showed the front of the sedan had been ripped off, while its engine was ejected and landed 50 metres away on the opposite side of the six-lane road.

The unmarked police vehicle stopped about 90 metres further down South Street with a smashed windscreen and a metal road sign lodged in its bonnet. A male police officer in his 40s and a female officer in her 30s were taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital as a precaution. The Major Crash Investigation Section is investigating the incident.

Police allege the accused stole a grey SUV from a home on Elizabeth Street in White Gum Valley at about 3.10am yesterday. Officers spotted the vehicle travelling north on Albany Highway in Maddington at 10.35am and attempted to stop it using lights and sirens. Police allege the driver failed to stop and travelled through Thornlie, Langford, Beaconsfield, Coogee and Leeming, colliding with a police car, driving through red lights and travelling on the wrong side of the road.

After allegedly crashing into a civilian vehicle, the Doubleview man was tracked by police helicopter to a caravan park in Coogee, where he was arrested after allegedly trying to flee on foot. He faces eight charges, including driving without a licence, reckless driving to escape police pursuit and possession of methamphetamine. He is expected to appear in Perth Magistrates Court later today.
