According to ABC News, a 29-year-old Nile man has been charged with arson and other offences in connection with 11 separate fires in northern Tasmania, including a significant blaze at Breadalbane that damaged power infrastructure.
Tasmania Police had earlier charged the man over three fires, including a fire at a public toilet block in Perth. Longford Police and the Tasmania Fire Service have been investigating fires reported between August 2025 and April 2026, across an area from Perth to Ulverstone.
Police say the man has also been charged over eight other fires alleged to have been deliberately lit, including incidents at Longford, Sassafras, Whitemore and Breadalbane. The Breadalbane fire burned through thick gorse and vegetation beside the Midland Highway on April 20.
Police described the Breadalbane blaze as significant. It destroyed power poles, caused local power outages and required 20 fire crews to contain. No injuries were reported. Inspector Craig Fox said the fire had placed the public at risk, while investigations into several other fires in the region continue. The man is due to next appear in court on September 24.
