Vickrum Digwa has been found guilty of murdering 18-year-old Henry Nowak using a ceremonial knife in Southampton. The incident occurred on 3 December, when Nowak was returning home from a night out. Digwa, 23, claimed he acted in self-defense, alleging that Nowak had used a racist insult and attacked him. However, the jury rejected this defense, leading to his conviction.

According to BBC News, Digwa was also convicted of carrying a knife in public, while his mother, Kiran Kaur, was found guilty of assisting an offender. The court heard that Digwa had concealed the knife in a sheath around his neck, and he later gave it to his mother, who was seen visibly upset during the proceedings.

The attack was not witnessed, but neighbors reported hearing Nowak’s cries for help as he attempted to escape. He suffered five stab wounds, including a fatal injury to the chest. The police initially handcuffed Nowak as they responded to the scene, not realizing the severity of his injuries until later.

Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Robert France expressed regret over the police’s initial response, stating that they had been misled by Digwa’s 999 call. He emphasized the complexity of the crime scene and confirmed that an investigation has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

Following the verdict, the Sikh Federation UK stated that the incident was a tragic act of violence and highlighted the need for greater understanding of the significance of the Kirpan, a ceremonial dagger worn by practicing Sikhs. They noted that the weapon used by Digwa was not representative of the traditional Kirpan.

Nowak’s family described him as a kind and talented individual who was fully embracing university life. They expressed their heartbreak over his untimely death, stating that their world would never be the same without him.
