Arabic version: عودة ماسيف أتاك مع أغنية جديدة مظلمة تضم توم ويتس
Massive Attack has made a striking return with their first single in a decade, titled “Boots on the Ground,” featuring guest vocals by Tom Waits. This new track, released under the label Play It Again Sam, is described as a dark hymn that reflects the unsettling realities of contemporary society. According to The Guardian, the song showcases a blend of unsettling sounds, including arrhythmic clatter, gloomy piano, and military snares, underscoring a Beefheartian portrayal of a warmonger.
The release comes after a lengthy hiatus from new music, with the last single being “The Spoils” a decade ago. Massive Attack’s output has been scarce, largely due to their focus on political activism rather than musical production. Frontman Robert Del Naja was among the 500 people arrested at a recent protest, highlighting the band’s ongoing commitment to addressing pressing global issues.
“Boots on the Ground” features a seven-minute runtime, with almost three minutes dedicated to a disconcerting intro and outro featuring Waits’s labored breathing, creating a haunting atmosphere. The song’s lyrics, delivered from the perspective of a violent authority figure, include surreal and distressing imagery, reflecting the band’s evolution into darker, more abstract soundscapes since their early days.
Waits’s collaboration with Massive Attack is a testament to their ability to attract high-profile artists, treating them as equal partners in the creative process. His distinctive vocal style infuses the track with a unique quality, and the unsettling themes are a fitting commentary on current events. Despite its dark tone, the song is a reminder of the band’s influential role in shaping the musical landscape, particularly with their debut album, “Blue Lines,” which spawned the trip-hop genre.
“Boots on the Ground” is not likely to displace the band’s classic hits, but it serves as a powerful statement relevant to today’s turbulent times, encapsulating the band’s ability to blend music with meaningful commentary.
