According to BBC News, England head coach Brian McDermott has urged Super League to accept investment from Australia’s NRL, saying a partnership could improve the English game. McDermott, who is also assistant coach of the Gold Coast Titans, said the quality of Super League’s players, coaches and product was not the issue, but its marketing and presentation.
Talks remain under way after Super League clubs rejected a £35m package from the Australian Rugby League Commission. A second deadline of 15 October passed without an agreement. A formal partnership between the two leading competitions is viewed as an important step towards increasing revenue for the European competition. McDermott said NRL investment could be “very, very positive” and described it as potential validation for Super League.
Super League has yet to agree a new title sponsorship deal, complete broadcast negotiations or finalise fixtures for the 2027 campaign. London Broncos’ place is also not fully determined. The Broncos finished 16th in the yearly grading list, below Championship side Barrow Raiders, despite winning the second-tier Grand Final, the 1895 Cup and the regular-season title. They still hope to play in Super League in 2027, with backing from Australian businessman Grant Wechsel and former Brisbane Broncos player Darren Lockyer.
McDermott said additional finance could expand the talent pool available to future England coaches. He contrasted the NRL’s player pathways and resources with those in Britain, where he said clubs could not populate three teams below the senior side with specialist players in key positions. The scale of the financial gap was illustrated by the NRL’s record $5.3bn (£3.97bn) television agreement over seven years in July, while Super League’s Sky Sports deal, which expired at the end of 2026, was worth about £21.5m a year.
