Adam Simon McGovern, a former mental health nurse, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for the persistent sexual abuse of a 14-year-old girl, alongside an additional 18 months for making indecent recordings of women and children in public places. According to ABC News, McGovern was found guilty of 23 charges related to ‘upskirting’ videos taken in Perth in 2022.
The abuse of the teenager occurred while McGovern was employed at the State’s Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS). The court heard that he groomed the victim, progressing from lingering hugs to serious sexual abuse, including unprotected sex during therapy sessions and after her release from the facility.
District Court Judge Seamus Rafferty SC emphasized the severity of McGovern’s actions, stating that there was a significant need to protect the community from him. The victim described the prolonged abuse as having fundamentally altered her life, expressing that the system designed to support her failed her.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court issued a lifetime violence restraining order in favor of the victim. McGovern will be eligible for parole in late 2035, with the court highlighting the lasting impact of his offenses on both the victims and public safety.
