At least 11 people have been killed after a Bolivian military cargo plane crashed in the western city of El Alto.

The incident happened at 18:20 local time (22:20 GMT) on Friday as the plane was arriving at El Alto International Airport after travelling from the city of Santa Cruz, according to the country’s air traffic control authority.

The plane, identified as a C-130 Hercules by the defense ministry, reportedly skidded off the runway and collided with vehicles on a nearby motorway. Following the crash, the airport was temporarily closed.

The defense ministry confirmed that the aircraft was transporting banknotes to the Central Bank of Bolivia but did not provide casualty numbers. An investigation into the crash is currently underway.

Authorities have warned the public that the banknotes involved have no purchasing power and attempting to collect or use them would be considered a crime. Reports indicate that some individuals approached the crash site in an attempt to retrieve the banknotes. Footage from the scene shows the damaged plane and severely impacted vehicles.
