According to ABC News, west Victorian stock agent Gary Driscoll has listed his 2009 Toyota LandCruiser for sale after travelling almost 1 million kilometres. The Nhill resident averaged more than 180 kilometres a day while driving to properties across western Victoria.

The vehicle’s digital odometer reads 999,999km and the LandCruiser is parked in Nhill. Mr Driscoll has chosen not to drive the remaining roughly 300 metres to the 1 million-kilometre mark, saying he wants the buyer to have that privilege. He said he did not know whether the odometer would return to zero or remain on all nines after reaching the milestone.

Online bidding opens on Monday morning and will run for two weeks. Mr Driscoll said he could not put a firm value on the vehicle, adding that its price would be determined by buyers. He said he thought it should make more than $30,000, while noting that “the value will be in the eyes of the beholder”.

The Horsham Toyota dealership said the LandCruiser had been serviced almost 100 times and was the most travelled car it had seen. It said it was the first vehicle it had encountered to reach 1 million kilometres, particularly with its original engine. Toyota could not confirm Australia’s highest-mileage Toyota, but said it knew of several customer vehicles that had passed the milestone.

Automotive journalist Toby Hagon described a car with 1 million kilometres as “extremely rare”, especially one being offered at auction. He said LandCruisers retained value strongly, but that age and distance travelled affected price. Mr Hagon said 4WDs and utes were more likely to reach such distances because long country-road driving could be gentler on engines than lower-speed city travel.
