Morocco have been declared the winners of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) following a decision by the Confederation of African Football (Caf) to overturn Senegal’s initial victory. This ruling comes after Senegal’s players controversially walked off the pitch during the final match, which took place on 18 January 2026.

In the final, Senegal had beaten Morocco 1-0, but the match was marred by controversy when Senegal’s players refused to continue after the hosts were awarded a stoppage-time penalty. Although the players eventually resumed play, the penalty was saved, and Senegal scored in extra time. However, Caf’s appeal board later declared that Senegal had forfeited the match, resulting in a 3-0 victory for Morocco.

According to BBC News, Senegal’s Football Federation plans to appeal this decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, labeling it “unfair, unprecedented and unacceptable.” Caf stated that Senegal’s actions violated Article 82 of the Afcon regulations, which governs team conduct during matches.

The Moroccan Football Association (FRMF) expressed that their appeal was not intended to question the teams’ performances but to ensure adherence to competition regulations. They emphasized their commitment to maintaining clarity and stability within African football.

Despite the ruling, the emotional impact of the original final remains. Senegal’s players celebrated their supposed victory with a parade, and many took to social media to express their feelings about the overturned result. Football journalist Maher Mezahi noted that the emotional experience of the match cannot be erased, regardless of the new ruling.
