According to The Guardian, Natalie Imbruglia has discussed the songs tied to her childhood, karaoke choices and reactions to her hit Torn, as her album Algorithm is set for release on 4 September.

Imbruglia said her father gave her the Mamas & the Papas’ California Dreamin’ on vinyl for her fifth birthday. She later begged her mother to buy Michael Jackson’s Beat It at a record shop in the suburbs of Sydney.

The singer said she might perform Torn at karaoke only at parties, when she is drunk and encouraged by friends. She named John Farnham’s You’re the Voice as a song whose lyrics she knows because it became a tour-bus anthem after shows.

Imbruglia also recalled being told that lyrics to Joni Mitchell’s Coyote were an original poem written about her, before recognising the words years later. For party music, she chose Tom Tom Club’s Genius of Love, saying it works regardless of the mood or crowd.

Addressing comments that Torn is a cover, Imbruglia said the song changed her life and noted that she has been “tortured” over the issue. She selected Jacob Collier’s Little Blue for mornings, Donny Hathaway’s A Song for You as a song that makes her cry, and Queen’s Another One Bites the Dust followed by Don’t Stop Me Now for her funeral.
