Fifteen-year-old Macy Watson experienced a significant change in her personality following a concussion, but a recent trial has aided her recovery. Macy, who suffered the injury during a school trip to the Victorian beachside suburb of Torquay, faced initial symptoms of dizziness and headaches, which later evolved into anxiety and irritability. Her mother, Jo, expressed deep concern about Macy’s struggles, noting that her daughter had lost her usual ‘spark’.

According to ABC News, after several weeks of ineffective treatment, Macy was referred to a trial concussion clinic run by the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI). The program, which included 158 participants aged 8 to 18, found that 94% of participants experienced symptom improvement after eight weeks. Notably, 67% of these children were considered to have ‘fully’ recovered, a significant increase compared to the 37% recovery rate among those receiving ‘usual’ or routine concussion care.

Lead researcher Professor Vicki Anderson and principal physiotherapist Katie Davies highlighted the success of the program, emphasizing that while concussions are serious, they can be effectively treated in the right circumstances. The trial aimed to identify children like Macy, who experience persistent symptoms beyond the typical recovery window.

Concussions are common among children, with studies indicating that one in five may sustain one by the age of 10. However, diagnosing concussions remains challenging due to the lack of definitive tests and varying symptoms, which can include headaches, dizziness, and emotional disturbances. The MCRI trial’s structured approach involved education and gradual return to activity, contrasting with older practices that emphasized complete rest.

The MCRI has announced plans for a national rollout of the program, which will include telehealth options to assist families outside major urban centers. This initiative aims to provide hope and support for families facing the challenges of concussion recovery, reinforcing the message that with appropriate treatment, children can successfully return to sports and normal activities.
