The Testaments, sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, arrives with similarly eerie timing. This new television series, based on Margaret Atwood’s novel, follows young women Agnes and Daisy at a preparatory academy in the totalitarian regime of Gilead. According to ABC News, the narrative shifts focus from the handmaids to these young girls being groomed for marriage.
The character Aunt Lydia, portrayed by Ann Dowd, takes on a new role as she transitions from a harsh enforcer of Gilead’s laws to a more complex figure grappling with her past. Dowd explains that Aunt Lydia’s journey reflects a deeper understanding of her actions and their consequences. The series is set just four years after The Handmaid’s Tale, allowing for a closer exploration of how the oppressive society shapes the lives of its female inhabitants.
Chase Infiniti stars as Agnes, the Gilead name for June and Luke’s daughter, while Lucy Halliday plays Daisy, a Pearl Girl with hidden motives. The series promises to delve into their evolving friendship amidst the rigid confines of Gilead’s elite.
The Testaments arrives at a time of global upheaval, echoing themes from its predecessor. Dowd points out parallels between the show’s narrative and current events, particularly regarding women’s rights and bodily autonomy. She emphasizes the importance of awareness and activism in the face of societal challenges. The first three episodes of The Testaments will be available on Disney+ from 6 PM AEST.
